As an equity investor in public sector infrastructure projects John Laing recognises that the projects in which it invests have an impact on the environment, be it through the use of energy and release of CO2 and its impact on climate change or the use of excessive of water and contributing to resource depletion or the volume of waste going to landfill and generation of further greenhouse gases or the loss of local biodiversity.

John Laing takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously and has achieved certification to ISO 14001:2004 so as to ensure effective environmental management, not only of its own direct activities but also the indirect aspects and impacts resulting from the occupation and use of our infrastructure projects in the health, educational, defence, justice and roads sectors. This unique position allows us, through strong leadership to influence our key construction and business service partners at the design stage and our clients and end users, to bring about positive change and reduce the adverse impact on the environment.

Our active participation in the Princes Trust May Day Summit, Carbon Disclosure Programme and the Mayor of London's carbon reduction initiative - Green 500, clearly demonstrates our commitment to take positive action to tackle climate change. Positive action is also being taken to measure and reduce the volume of water used throughout our projects and to encourage and support the reuse and recycling of waste thereby reducing the impact of landfill site and further generation of greenhouse gases, this is reflected in our environmental business Targets for 2010.

John Laing recognises that any adverse impact on biodiversity is minimised, primarily through effective planning during the early design stage and actively support both local and national conservation groups.
