Coleshill Parkway is a new, modern railway station, officially opened in September 2007. It is served by direct train services to Birmingham New Street in around 16 minutes, Leicester in 40 minutes and Stanstead Airport in around 3 hours. Local bus services also interchange at Coleshill Parkway for journeys to and from Birmingham International Airport & National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in around 20 minutes, and into most other local conurbations.
Coleshill Parkway is a multi-modal interchange. The project entailed minor changes to localised signalling infrastructure, and delivery of a station building, bus interchange, car park (185 Spaces), footbridge with lifts and road bridge; the latter of these is for bus use only, saving journey time and journey distances for bus users travelling to the surrounding area. Free car parking has now been established for users of the station until September 2015.
The scheme was conceived by Warwickshire County Council who secured private and public sector funding contributions towards the non-rail (bridge) elements. John Laing took the Council's concept and further developed the project through to full scheme approval from Network Rail (timetabling) and Department for Transport (business case, strategic merit). The concession will run for 20 years.
Our partners during the development phase included Warwickshire County Council (project oversight, funding & design services) North Warwickshire Borough Council (planning & funding), Mott Macdonald (design) and Arup (business case). Carillion constructed the entire facility.
Now operational, day-to-day station operation (light cleaning and light maintenance duties) is carried out by London Midland, part of the Go-ahead Group. The station is manned 24-hours a day to provide security for passengers. Our partners, Inviron provide planned preventive and reactive call off maintenance to the station.
A half-hourly train service calls at the station, provided by Arriva CrossCountry. It is expected that there will be a throughput of around 180,000 passengers each year at the end of the ramp up period.
This is the second railway station project delivered through a partnership of Warwickshire County Council and John Laing, the first being Warwick Parkway.
The station has won two awards:
• Institute of Civil Engineers - Partnership Award 2008
• North Warwickshire Borough Council Civic Awards 2008 - Contribution to Local Economy
